The LSAP’s top candidate for prime minister Paulette Lenert on Sunday evening said her party is ready for coalition talks. “I’m happy that we’re still a contender,” she said. Under the latest projections, the party could form a majority with the CSV. “We are ready for talks,” Lenert said.
Déi Gréng on the other hand admitted defeat. “Fact is, it’s an enormous disappointment,” said the party’s candidate for prime minister Sam Tanson during a speech at the elections HQ. The Greens are projected to lose six seats in parliament and win just three mandates. But Tanson also showed herself combative. “We will be here. We will be a strong voice,” she said, with the party there to remind the next government to protect the climate and biodiversity.

‘Clear mandate’ for CSV to form government: Frieden

As the CSV emerged as the strongest force in parliament – and amid the projected collapse of the current coalition – the party’s top candidate for prime minister, Luc Frieden, said: “The result is clear.” Voters “have given the CSV the clear mandate to form the next government,” he said, adding that he had already spoken to top candidates of the other leading parties.
“The CSV has delivered an election result that is far beyond that of the polls and that you can describe as remarkable: 29% of votes, 21 seats, that’s a third of the seats in parliament,” Frieden said. The last pre-election poll in September had projected for the CSV to win 19 seats.

Latest projections for South and Centre confirm trend

The current coalition government is on track to lose its majority in parliament according to the latest projections. The DP could win as many as 14 seats in parliament, gaining two mandates. The LSAP could add one seat to reach 11. The big losers of Sunday’s election are the Greens, who stand to lose six seats in parliament and reach just three mandates.
The CSV would be the biggest group in parliament with 21 seats, which could leave it to become the coalition kingmaker. Déi Lénk, which under a previous projection faced losing one of its seats, should keep its two mandates. The Pirate Party stands to increase its seats to three, from two. The right-wing ADR on the other hand could grow to six seats, from four.
No other party garnered enough support to win seats in parliament.
