Health Minister Paulette Lenert, who is the LSAP's candidate for prime minister, has comfortably topped the poll in her home town of Remich. In her first parliamentary election, Lenert - whose term as minister was dominated by the Covid-19 pandemic - secured 718 votes, putting her well ahead of her cabinet colleague Lex Delles of the DP, on 668, and Internal Security and Housing Minister Henri Kox, who won just 244 votes for the Greens. Léon Gloden, of the CSV, who is the mayor of Grevenmacher, received 489 votes. However, Lenert's popularity did not translate into support for the LSAP overall in the area. The party finished in third place in Remich with just over 17%, well behind the DP on 23% and the CSV on 28%.

A country with a long history of coalitions

15:58

Luxembourg has a long history of coalition building. The last single-party cabinet dates back all the way to 1925. Forming a coalition takes time. First the parties will digest the results from Sunday and calculate which combination even has the required 31 seats for a majority in parliament. In 2013, even though the DP, LSAP and Déi Gréng had decided within five days of the election that they would begin negotiations, it was only on 29 November, following 14 meetings, that party leaders formally signed a coalition agreement. In 2018, it took even longer with the coalition agreement only being adopted some seven weeks after polling day.

Local elections re-do

Voters in Berdorf and Beaufort are voting twice today. In Beaufort, the result of the June municipal election had to be annulled after a candidate was found not to live in the commune, a requirement to run for local office. In Berdorf on the other hand, a candidate died shortly before the election, meaning the vote couldn’t take place. Both communes are now holding local and national elections on the same day.
