The near future brings autonomous driving, a permanent connectivity and with that a shift in responsibility, the possibility to monetize car data and an increase in monitoring information – all this requires a smart wiring system that links the physical with the data world.

Dr. Martin Döring is Head of Development of Wiring Harness at Volkswagen. He now shares the perspective of an OEM regarding the future challenges and usage of wiring harness components.

With new mega-trends arising, consumers demand a different type of electric car. This has lead to new requirements, which have been previously discussed here at the conference. So how does Volkswagen handle these challenges?

The answer at Volkswagen wiring harness department is the "W-Strategy" which contains five elements:
- Wiring New Material as new components become available
- Wiring New Architecture in order to make the electrical system architecture future proof
- Wiring New Data means handling the complexity by using a sophisticated latest gen. toolchain
- Wiring New Production as new production approaches become available
- This leads to a Wiring Development Company which develops and operates with all insights of the W-strategy
