We have been blogging live from Barcelona for the past day and a half, providing up-to-the-minute coverage of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung’s events at the Global Progressive Mobilisation Summit. The speakers have explored many aspects of the progressive agenda across 10 panel discussions. Now these sessions are over, but the GPM summit goes on as global leaders from the progressive movement gather in the hours ahead. They are set to address thousands of attendees about “Mobilising our democracies together, working together for our future.” The programme runs from 13:00 to 18:00, and we will keep you updated here in our live blog. -fw

Focus less on exports, more on raising wages

Philipp Türmer is calling for a fundamental overhaul of Germany’s economic model. Rather than continuing to rely on export dominance, domestic demand must be strengthened – primarily through higher wages. That would require a tax system that no longer places a heavy burden on labour while barely taxing wealth, capital and investment income. Türmer says this would not only be fairer, but also make economic sense. Stronger demand strengthens the economy as a whole. -fw
