Philipp Türmer is calling for a fundamental overhaul of Germany’s economic model. Rather than continuing to rely on export dominance, domestic demand must be strengthened – primarily through higher wages. That would require a tax system that no longer places a heavy burden on labour while barely taxing wealth, capital and investment income. Türmer says this would not only be fairer, but also make economic sense. Stronger demand strengthens the economy as a whole. -fw

Johanna Siebert emphasises that safe working conditions strengthen people’s trust in democratic institutions. This could be a way for social democratic forces to regain the trust of workers, she says. Kate Bell adds: to improve working conditions, workers need to organise themselves more effectively – that is the foundation. Trade unions have a central role to play in this. -nk

The goal has to be for 80% of workers in the European Union to be covered by a collective agreement, says Esther Lynch. To achieve this, member states in particular must play their part by talking with and bargaining with companies and trade unions. The EU can act as a facilitator so that across the boards, collective agreements can become the new norm for workers. -nk
