Risa Hontiveros points out that people have more immediate concerns than multilateralism, which is why international cooperation is often not seen as very important – yet this is exactly what lays the foundations for a better life. Ndaba Gaolathe stresses that international discussions such as those taking place here in Barcelona only make sense if they can be translated into people’s everyday lives. When he returns to the villages, he must be able to explain the discussions we are having here. Botswana’s political culture is all about remaining in dialogue, this is a deeply ingrained part of political culture, to remain in dialogue with differing political camps and not be quick to point the finger at others. -fw
