Time to create and shape

At the close of the discussion, Mikael Leyi, General Secretary of SOLIDAR, called for a new understanding of political leadership. The conclusion is clear: we have the opportunities, we have the targets and there is no shortage of solutions. Given the magnitude of the climate crisis, what is needed now above all is collective action. After all, we are ruining our own home and people know this, they can feel the consequences in very tangible ways. That is exactly why the socio-ecological transformation is the only truly meaningful progressive project of our time. -fw

Not just repair but transform

It is not enough to fix markets, we need to transform them completely, says Mariana Mazzucato. All too often, companies focus solely on the short-term costs of climate investments and overlook the long-term benefits, she argues. “The cost of inaction is much greater than the cost of action.” This is exactly where there is an opportunity to implement progressive economic policy and communicate this to the public. But the first step must be to value labour and citizens more and give them a greater say not only at work but also in politics. Mazzucato’s appeal: If you want to deliver, you must be bold in shaping the future rather than merely managing it. -nk
