In Session 12, Modester Kaphala from Malawi Urban Poor Federation shared experiences of tackling the impacts of recurrent urban disasters and how the community are working on resilience recovery and response solutions using the LLA principles.

They conduct meetings with governors, women and youth, and support the use of data and mapping information for community planning and for negotiating improvements in service provision.
The enhanced collaboration between communities and local government provides the chance to talk about building resilience. Now there are over 500 community members, the majority of whom are women that are benefiting from this collaboration and also learning new skills like shoe-making and mushroom farming, piloting NBS solutions in urban settings and improving waste management.

Session 11: How do we track progress of LLA in practice?

In this session, Emma Baker of CDKN looked at how we can use stories to track and show progress. She shared a series of powerful images demonstrating how the project 'Voices from the Frontline ' captured stories of local action and resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Emma Baker said that the pandemic showed that good storytelling could highlight the multiple hazards and shocks that communities faced. Interviews and photos - often created by community members and local community organisations - could capture resilience and adaptation in nuanced ways.

The stories also captured examples of grassroots leadership, particularly by women. The stories were published online. We share some of the images below:
