Paris’ bicycle commuting scene is also different than what I’ve seen in the San Francisco Bay area. In Paris, I’ve learned cycling is not an exclusive mode of transportation for athletes with sports clothes and speed bikes, but for anyone on their way to work dressed in their business suits. Comfortable bikes like cruisers allow for all sorts of wardrobe choices like stylish dresses and outfits. I’ve also spotted people with interesting bike accessories from puppies to children!

As a sustainable mobility enthusiast from the US, one of my main excitements of visiting Paris was to see an efficient public transportation system! I was not disappointed when I arrived and saw the amount of pedestrians and cyclists claiming the streets and relying on the efficient underground metro systems. The benefits of a more car free city are visible through the vibrant outdoor life that Paris has. As can be seen from the pictures, Parisians enjoying outdoor cafes on every block, carefree children playing outside with parents not too worried about the safety of their children. These pictures show people in Paris out and about, breathing in the fresh air, getting exercise, and sharing a cup of coffee with a friend. They are enjoying life and its beauty to the fullest and living in what seems like the dream city for many American urban city planners. When some Americans spend over two hours a day commuting to work, how much could their quality of life improve if we were to move towards a similar transportation system?
