In the beginning, not knowing which bathrooms I was allowed to use and where to look was a struggle for me. The public sidewalk bathrooms were mysterious. After walking to four or five unaccessible bathrooms I finally found one that was ready to use. Once inside I couldn’t for the life of me figure out how to lock the doors as the bathroom robot voice spoke to me in French. As I was in the motion of pulling up my dress, to my embarrassment the doors began to open to the public! I realized I had pressed the open button instead of the lock button! I would love to share about the time I entered a bathroom without toilet paper, but for some reason someone ripped those pages out of my notebook. Must have been an emergency! Anyway, most of my bathroom problems were solved when I became more bold in my entry into random restaurant bathrooms.

Jenni came home one day annoyed that the lady at the bakery had not given her change back and she had not spoken up. Later when I went to the bakery that lady tried to do the same thing with me. I wanted to confront the lady about the “mistake”. Unfortunately, she didn’t know English, so uncomfortably I had two customers translate the situation to her but she said it was too late. As I was already walking out the door with the feeling of unmet hopes but also happy to hopefully make her regret taking advantage of foreigners, they called after me “Mademoiselle, the owner is here”, and the bakery owner was kind and gave me nice pastry – a chocolate cookie. As I told Jenni of my success, I had a smile on my face as wide as the Arc de Triomphe (cringe).
