Michael Staak disagrees with the thesis put forward by the former Australian premier that China's main goal is dominance. He argues that domestic challenges such as making China's economy, driven by expansion, more sustainable will force future generations of leaders to put the "goal of dominance on the back burner." Michael Staack spells out a fact that for many is not clear: Many territorial disputes in Asia have remained in effect since World War II. "The security conflicts have not been resolved; the history has never been processed," he said. That means you can't really compare Europe and Asia in many respects. "Egon Bahr was skeptical about the idea that you could simply transfer the European model to Asia. And I think he was right." -mb
