Former ambassador Rüdiger Lüdeking says we need to be realistic. Diplomacy is needed to identify a face-saving solution for the Russian president. However, Jean Asselborn, an experienced minister for foreign affairs, is skeptical: "Everyone wants diplomacy again," he says. "But diplomacy is done by people." His feeling is that Putin has no interest in honest negotiations. He follows an ideology and denies reality, he says. "I don't know if we can believe even a single syllable he says." -mb"

The former U.S. ambassador to Germany, Richard Burt, says diplomatic progress is important, but that a diplomatic balance is the aim. He criticizes, "We focused on other issues. Now we have to live with the consequences." Of the German government's decision to significantly increase military spending, he says this was a "difficult but important decision." -ls
