Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul, Chairwoman of the Willy Brandt Kreis I met Egon Bahr many times during my time in the Young Socialists in the SPD. I admired his Ostpolitik. I admired his courage. 10:30

An epochal break - with consequences for the Global South

A year ago, preparations began at the Willy Brandt Kreis to hold a commemorative event to mark the 100th anniversary of Egon Bahr's birth. "Today, we find ourselves in a completely new situation in terms of world politics," says Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul, calling the all-out attack on Ukraine a watershed. "Such an epochal break is a brutal violation of all the agreements that bind us," she says, listing the Charter of Paris, the Budapest Memorandum and the UN Charter. Furthermore, says Wieczorek-Zeul, a former development minister, says there are broader problems, too. "This epochal break will increase hunger and poverty to extreme levels among those who are poorest in the Global South.” Are we in the prosperous West aware of this danger yet? -mb

"Impressive abilities"

Egon Bahr would have turned 100 today. Sabine Fandrych of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation pays tribute to him as a pioneering thinker, saying he had “impressive abilities," for example developing new axes of vision on political issues and his ability to constantly change perspective. Together with his colleagues, Bahr developed the policy of "change through rapprochement" and that of "common security," among other things. His expertise and way of thinking are now being missed, Fandrych said. Sometimes she wishes "we had an Egon Bahr right now." -ls
