Xiu Yun Zhang, a farmer representative from the Farmers’ Seed Network in China: One seed is a life. That is why I continue my seed guardian role for 7 years. Session 1E on nature-based solutions highlighted the importance of organising local communities to build social capital, resilience and access markets.

Xiu Yun Zhang, a farmer representative from the Farmers’ Seed Network in China reported that local farmers were losing their traditional seeds until Yinching Song from the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences came to the village to discuss seed and plant breeding.

Local varieties of maize work well in the mountainous regions because they're resilient, and the network has organised a women's cooperative to save, breed and share seeds, and have introduced local seeds across four villages. They now have a community seed bank with 100+ crop varieties including 50 maize, 8 wheat, 5 rice – all distributed to women to plant.

The Farmer Seed Network engages over 30 communities in 10 provinces in China – highlighting the importance of organising local communities to create social capital and build resilience.

On Climate Finance: Having local decision-making enables quick response to climate-related disasters - experiences in Pakistan show they can respond to multiple situations within 24 hours. Pilot scheme proved hugely successful in demonstrating how you can get finance to places where there is no state mechanism for channelling climate finance.

Lessons include the need to have local capacity in order to make decisions and having an amount of funds available in a pool so money can travel quickly when needed.
