Case Study from Solomon Islands

09:43
25.10.2021
First Vatina Devesi (Operations Manager World Vision) is talking about a case study from Solomon Island. The biggest hazard risks are here coming from cyclons. With the help of a World Vision Programme, they build up a forecasting system and cylone tracking app. A big challenge is the warning of local communities in villages and the provinces. Therefore they established village disaster risk reduction committees. They are calling directly for weather forecast updates.

Oliver from CBM is introducing the participants of the workshop and explains, why this workshop is interesting.
  • There is a lot of  discussions or localizations of humanitarian aid following the World Humanitarian Summit 2016
  • the discussion remains still a lot on a theoretical level though
  • the discussion look mainly at funding streams

The Workshop "Localisation and Disaster Risk Reduction" wants to discuss things more practically.

Localisation and Disaster Risk Reduction

09:32
25.10.2021
Not only since the World Humanitarian Summit in 2016 "localisation" became a buzzword for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR). How can local actors and communities be supported in their work and get fully involved in the humanitarian actions of international organisations? What can be done to strengthen the network of local actors and their efforts as first responders against humanitarian disasters?

Four DRR practitioners from Asia and Africa are addressing those and more questions in the workshop. During the workshop there will be thematic inputs from Solomon Islands, Myanmar, Zimbabwe, and Indonesia.
