Finding local data

Having a long-term access is crucial here, too, as is the right data. “Data on the local ground is important. We need to be better informed to react faster", explains Kofler. "We have to act now - but it is also important for the long-run." That are some lessons which were learned in Germany. Especially local data is helping a lot here.

Nkhoma knows all these challenges in Malawi – and he is very active working here. “Malawi has experienced damages by catastrophes which are often weather-related”, says Nkhoma. And the disasters are increasing by the climate change, like floods creating displaced people, but also Covid-19 is adding up more problems, like not enough vaccinated people in rural areas. In 2019 a new resilience strategy was created, and it is supposed to strenghten the society. The transition requires more effort and the challenge is to develop it even further to include new challenges.

Dyce Nkhoma, Deputy Director of Response and Recovery at Malawi Government Malawi is like many other African countries really hardly affected by climate change.
To give an example, we always thought we would be cyclone proof since we are not close to the sea. But in 2019 we were really badly affected by a cyclone. Desasters like that are increasing because of the climate change.
