Anna Regensburg guides us through the different welding options and their advantags. She compares torsional ultrasonic welding, friction stir spot welding and single sided resistance spot welding.

These three welding methods allow to work with foils from 2.0 mm (with torsional ultrasonic welding) down to 0.2mm (with single sided resistance spot welding).

Costs are expected to be roughly the same for all three methods.

Prof. Bergmann explains the challenges for welding contacts in the area of battery technology. „We want to see a low contact resistance while having big contact surfaces, high static strength as well as sufficient dynamic strength to handle vibrations and also a high consistency when it comes to strains at different thermal situations.“
