#Localinvolvement In local settings where people are often acting as volunteers, friends and enemies encounter one another in relatively small spaces, where hate speech can have devastating effects. Tjark Bartels, former district chief executive in the Hameln-Pyrmont district, and Péter Niedermüller, Mayor of Erzsébetváros district in Budapest, Hungary, share insights in an exchange moderated by Anne Haller from the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung. All too frequently, these problems stifle political engagement and people withdraw.

What can we do to counteract intimidation? Can we organise a show of solidarity with victims of hate speech? How can we mobilise people who want to provide democratic support? And when is the right time to press criminal charges?
