Franceline Jimenez of Care Philippines on three things practitioners of anticipatory should keep in mind moving forward:
  1. Creativity – think outside of the box on how we do our work to address these challenges, to find solutions.
  2. Flexibility – structures and protocols can be quite rigid, we need to revise them so multiple hazards and changing circumstances can be addressed
  3. Data – we need to ensure that we are documenting science, actions and thoughts of all stakeholders. This will inform how we work in the next few years, but also in future pandemics.
“So future generations of anticipatory action practitioners can learn from us and see our best practices and learning on how to address a pandemic.”

Hilla Wessel

Typically, communities after a variety of natural hazards are in urgent need of shelter, food, access to safe and clean water and sanitation facilities. These needs have an impact on whether local transmissions of Covid-19 in communities can happen after disasters. We also see that the pandemic and quarantines affected the resources of our local governments to respond to other risks. The other panelists and me, we never faced a pandemic like this in our lives and we do not know when it will finish. We need to consider it in all our actions for other hazards.
