Eddie began the session with a personal story of rural to urban migration in Sub Saharan Africa. Those arriving are usually the rural poor, which often means arrival in informal settlements. These areas are often under resourced by public services and have a greater exposure to environmental and social risks. Their vulnerability is exacerbated by their limited economic capacity. Eco capacity is determined by a number of systems.

Session 2: Desert Locust & Rift Valley Fever Programmes

Claudia Pittiglio explains the Rift Valley Fever (RVF) Decision Support Tool

"This is how it looks like - a online platform. We can visualize Rift Valley fever and overlay rainfall anomalies etc. It`s important also to know where roads, markets, villages are. This is now included in the tool. In the right bottom there is a report function - the main rapid risk assessment information is available there.

Workshops with our experts on field level, country and regional level were key to better understand the risk factors. One health guideline document has been developed. Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania were the pilot countries for Rift Valley Fever. Since 2019 we could integrate all this information and develop the tool."
