Dr. Wamalwa KinyanjuiI of the ICPALD, IGAD Centre for Pastoral Areas and Livestock Development introduces the organizations and its focus.

ICPALD is a specialized institution that supports countries to implement anticipatory actions in mostly arid and semi-arid regions. The help that ICPALD provides ranges from technical support on supplementary feeding activities or linking early warning systems with pastory management. In this regard, forecast of diseases may give valuable information, e.g. for the development of livestock early warning systems.

In case of a drought, other ICPALD activities aim at providing sufficient water resources and feed stocks to livestock, insurance schemes as well as supporting the dialogue in cross-regional cooperation. This facilitates some countries’ to expand their markets to increase exports to other regions, e.g. to Asia.

According to Dr Wamalwa: “ICPALD can build corporations to build resilience in the region, strengthen forecasts for livestock management and strengthen coordination and information sharing.”
