Liz Stephens, University of Reading, FATHUM project, shared her insights. She focused on the following:
  • Interdisciplinary science-practice partnerships to bring different insights
  • Longer timespan of research projects
  • Bringing scientists to the field helps them to understand the scale of their work
  • Bring the latest science to early action protocols
  • Overall they can help build capacity in areas with low forecast capacity using global forecasts - for example GLOFAS in Uganda, and in countries with higher capacity they can bring the latest science to support forecasts with extended lead times and forecast the flood timing - for example in Bangladesh.

Question to Liz Stephens

"Do you think that the research can immediately feed into operational anticipatory action, with learning and iteration integrated, or should we always wait for the research to be fully 'matured'? Liz explained that some would say “research takes 3 years to come up with an answer and even then its the wrong one.”
