The Boom of Urbanisation

11:09
20.10.2020
Be free to ask as many questions as you wish. If you like to have the full power point presentation and an outline of the method, kindly drop an email to Luise Michel (l.Michel@drk.de). Urbanisation is the topic of the day - and the special risks of such areas. Massive urbanisaton started about 1950, today especially in Asia, but also more and more in Europe. In 2050 about 15% of the global population will live in mega cities. Dhaka for example will grow from about 1.5 million people to 20,9 million in 2025.

Urbanisation often happens unregulated and in many dimensions. One of the Sustainable Development Goals is the goal to make cities safe, inclusive, resilient and sustainable. Pollution, slums and urban sprawl are just some of the challenges here.

Are you urban ready? - Stakeholder mapping and risk communication in urban areas

Today more people are living in cities than in rural areas – and there will be even more. By 2050, about 68 percent of the global population will live in cities. But disasters which hit cities can hit them even worse: The urban population is more vulnerable and has different needs than in other areas. Thus, disaster management has to be prepared especially for urban environments and civilians. This topic will be discussed by:
  • Prof. Dr. Frauke Kraas (University of Cologne)
  • Sophie-Bo Heinkel (University of Cologne)
  • Arnaud Raulin (German Red Cross)
  • Dr. Marlene Willkomm (Stadtentwässerungsbetriebe Köln)
  • Natscha Bing (GRC)

Exchanging knowledge is one of the goals of this workshop, with focus on Myanmar und Madagascar.
