The winning of the new government in the 14th General Election, has created a spark of hope for freedom in the country. Inside their manifesto, Pakatan Harapan promises to revoke draconian laws that previously have been misused by the authority, including the Sedition Act, Prevention of Crime Act, Printing Presses and Publication Act, as well as mandatory death sentence by hanging. They also promise to ensure press freedom and will review all regulations related to the media and establish a Media Council, who is responsible to develop and implement a code of ethics on reporting and function as a hisbah body for public complaints.
