Feminist responses to the crisis of young men

Irja Vaateri and Philipp Türmer examine the question of how progressive politics can better respond to the uncertainty felt by young men. Vaateri emphasises that many young men are accustomed to growing up with certain privileges but at the same time, they often lack positive role models nowadays. Türmer says the study presented also offers hope in this sense. As young men move further to the right politically and young women further to the left, the job here is to develop convincing answers. He says it is non-negotiable that social democratic politics must always retain a feminist agenda. Both make it clear that feminist politics must be linked more closely to issues such as prosperity, housing, education and future opportunities – and that the crisis of masculinity can also be an opportunity to think afresh about masculinity itself. -fw
