Working towards real multilateralism

Jameson Timba from Zimbabwe says the world order is already changing – the crucial question is how to deal with it. He criticises the fact that institutions such as the UN, the World Bank and the IMF are still based on outdated architecture that does not adequately represent the Global South and Africa. At the same time, power is increasingly shifting towards major corporations, while states are losing influence. For progressives, one of the key issues is moving from symbolic to functional multilateralism, which is fairer and actually capable of action. -fw

Tim Klüssendorf: global problems require global responses

National solutions are not sufficiently able to tackle the current challenges – climate change and wars do not stop at national borders, says Tim Klüssendorf. Multilateralism and strong institutions such as the United Nations are necessary to ensure that the rule of law takes precedence over the law of the strongest. He also warns that unregulated AI is a threat to democracy. Technology and innovation must serve the public and need rules, he says. Only by cooperating beyond borders can we effectively take on the dangers that threaten the world. -nk

The Left has to ask itself some critical questions

Wayne Swan, former Australian Deputy Prime Minister, says we have a politics problem. If so many working class people are not voting for social democrats anymore, the left has to ask how effective it is. The fact that the far right has won elections, when it shouldn’t, is a warning sign. Reconstructing a fairer international order is not something that happens from the top, but is a grassroots movement, Swan says, calling for a strong social movement to win back trust. -fw
