From the closing plenary: Debate on indicators

16:28
30.10.2025
Lina Yassin, Climate Policy Researcher, IIED, argues that we don't need more layers of indicators.

She said: "We don't want another layer of reporting; what the GGA should be [doing] is building on existing mechanisms - systems already exist - and make decisions on resilience and adaptation.

"The GGA needs to shift its thinking from being the answer for all to being the connection between the ground and the global level.

"Adaptation is an iterative process - you learn by doing, and there is scaffolding in place.

"Indicators do not change life; they capture the story. They don't rebuild schools that were washed away or where farmers are failing."

Session preview: the Road to Belém and beyond

15:56
30.10.2025
The closing plenary is where today's conversations crystallise into the messages and demands we'll carry into the climate negotiations at COP30.

Our theme leads will report on:
  • what emerged during their sessions,
  • what we should be calling for right now and
  • what messages must reach COP30 negotiators.

We will also take a moment to look ahead to Belém, in conversation with a representative from the COP30 Presidency, identifying the most contentious issues we'll face in negotiations -- and crucially, the areas where our community can genuinely influence outcomes.

We'll have live Mentimeter polls to reveal what stood out most from the sessions, what action should be prioritised, and what's the one thing needed for profound change?

Developing goals via a civil society approach

15:38
30.10.2025
In session 6A,  Sasha Jattansingh reported on the Regional Goal on Adaptation for the Caribbean (RGA).

Global frameworks can be relatively disconnected from local climate realities, especially  those faced by vulnerable communities in small island developing states (SIDS).

But adaptation is often a context specific and localised process.

Sasha Jattansingh said the RGA was developed through a civil society approach with organisations across the Caribbean.

She said:
"Really and truly, the RGA is still evolving. The proposed RGA was developed out of a need to connect on- the-ground realities in the Caribbean with the GGA."

"It is grounded in the principles of LLA. The RGA will allow communities to participate and feed into GGA reporting and  bring that context and specificity."
