Understanding and managing systemic risks in an interconnected world: impacts and recovery pathways from COVID-19

11:25
26.10.2022
COVID-19 has changed a lot, not only but also our way of perceiving the systemic nature of risks. But recovery is also one of the topics we can learn from now and which always has to be part of the process. Recovery is often seen as a lower-priority aspect of disaster management, but it helps to regain strength and to reduce future risks, by “Build-Back-Better”, a part of the United Nations’ Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.
These speakers talk about this topic:
  • Angel Alberto Valdiviezo Ajila
  • Ayu Ketut Surtiari Gusti
  • Sumana Banerjee
  • Michael Hagenlocher (United Nations University, Institute for Environment and Human Security)
  • Saskia Werners (United Nations University, Institute for Environment and Human Security)

Breaking up silos

11:47
26.10.2022
Ayu Ketut Surtiari Gusti talks about the challenges of the pandemic. Doing research on what kind of social changes happened was an important point. It is crucial to reach people with social protection, special ways for this has to be found. James Ritchie explains more about his experiences from Germany, where he currently lives: “We are looking so much on recovery, we don’t look enough at the cross-border possibilities. We have to connect the systems and break down the silos.”

Building up resilience on a national level is important - and nobody should wait for the government to do it. Cascading resilience could help, too. Anika Schiling shares some memories about experiencing the pandemic and the flood in Ahrtal at the same time. But building back and even better happened at once, even without ressources. Schools in Germany weren’t far in using online learning tools, but had to learn fast during the pandemic. Often one way of acting can lead to new behaviour and acting similar in unknown situations.
