Amy Davison, Head of Climate Change Adaptation, Energy and Climate Change Directorate in the City of Cape Town, explained what the main barriers are for city planners and managers dealing with issues of heat in cities.

Possible solutions that are being considered in Cape Town, South Africa include developing and activating a heat wave and 'high heat day' operating procedure for public health facilities, mapping locations of existing trees and prioritising tree-poor neigbourhoods for planting programmes, ensuring outdoor workers are given the correct training and protective clothing, and planting mature water-wise trees for higher survival rates and water using captured rainwater.
