Compute units and the domain vs. domain independent approach

„We will see a dramatic increase of the computing power in ECUs (electronic control units). The increased compute power also leads to a higher power consumption“, explains Dr. Lock some of the upcoming changes.
„We quite often hear in our talks with the OEMs, that they continue to follow a domain focused approach for the wiring harness and are therefore introducing new domain compute units.“
In comparison to most of the big OEMs, some new car brands (mainly from the US west coast) are following a domain independent approach with central compute units, says Dr. Lock.

Aluminum wires with braided screen are now available for OEMs

Mr. Fleischer shows the results of some early research: „We’ve tested aluminium braided wires at extreme temperature, as high as 130° and as low as -30°C. We’ve tested vibrations with a constant change of the stress level. As a result we recommend to increase the diameter from 0.2 to 0.3mm in order to compensate the downsides of aluminium. But this still offers the chance to save 10% of the weight and also 10% of the costs.“

The research of Gebauer & Griller is now almost finished: „We are now ready to cooperate and work with OEMs.“
