Since 2014, Smiling Gecko has given hundreds of people from the slums of the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh a new life in the country side. The NGO´s vision is to create a model rural community that, after overcoming initial challenges, is capable of operating as a self-sustained entity and that provides the people living in it with sustainable education and training that will give them dignity and gainful employment.

For this purpose, the NGO has purchased a 120 hectares site in the northern province of Kampong Chnnang: It is the heart of the organisation’s cluster projects, where people are given jobs and apprenticeships in agriculture, tourism, crafts, trade and teaching.
