AI isn't magic – AI is math! People's common mis-perception is that #AI is a magic black box. But there is no "magic" about it: it's just maths and statistical algorithms...

Even practitioners don't particularly understand how neural networks actually work. But if a decision is based on math – as math is NOT biased – why is there such thing as bias #AI?

Well – undesirable bias occurs when the AI solution reflects the values of it human designer rather than purely factual reality. Bias is source from humans– those humans who create the mathematics.

According to Nobel-Prize winning psychologist Daniel Kahneman, bias results from mental processes associated with the way our brains learn about the world. Our brains create linkages between concepts, which include positive or negative associations between groups of people or characteristics.

While bias is a neutral cognitive phenomenon, it can affects the decisions we make on the job.

We All Have Bias

Psychologists and other scientists have shown that human beings, even those of us who firmly believe in equality, are prone to bias for and against certain groups of people (Casey, Warren, Cheesman, & Elek, 2012). We all have bias. It's unavoidable. Biases permeate our lives and impact almost every action we take. This not only affects the people we work with, it also influences the decisions we make on the job.
