Kostprobe:
"( ...) This handsomely produced and truly affordable volume is a treasure trove of new research on the object group of predominantly wooden, painted wall monuments commissioned by the early modern, Protestant, urban elites, a topic that has come increasingly to the fore in recent years.1 Its many high-quality photos are a pleasure to contemplate and explore in all the details they show, and the comprehensive bibliography helps to identify and access research, especially that done on a local level which may otherwise be difficult to come by. The two indices of people as well as place names give easy access to any part of the six hundred pages of this book. Visitors travelling to Zittau to see the wall monuments and the lenten veils may also wish to discover the large number of stone monuments and tomb houses, which Knüvener also mentions, preserved at various local cemeteries that still wait to be rediscovered, researched and documented."
