The Praterinsel – a place for culture, celebrations and Teradata

Today, the Praterinsel, surrounded by the Isar, is a place open to celebrations, but it is also home of the Deutscher Alpenverein (including a museum and a library), some government departments and for some artistic projects.

But why do some of the rooms have names like “Füllhalle” (“filling hall”) or “Zöllgewölbe” (“customs vault”)? The reason behind this is the distillery for schnapps and liquors which had been here between 1870 and 1984, which used the rooms for other purposes. Yet, today these unique rooms offer great possibilities for celebrations – and Teradata will have an amazing kick-off here!

The Prater in … Munich?

Wait, some of you might say: Praterinsel – isn’t Prater some place in Vienna?

You are right: the Prater in Vienna has actually been the role model for Munich’s Praterinsel, when innkeeper Anton Gruber decided 1810 to open a pub on this tiny island – the first actual building there (before that there was only a park and a garden for monks). Gruber’s dream was to create a place like the Prater, so he and some years later his son also opened a park, a merry-go-round and a ballroom.

For several centuries the Praterinsel was one of the trendiest places in Munich, later it became home to a schnapps distillery, and today it is again the place to be - now celebrating with Teradata.
